We often forget the power of the basics in astrology. Here we go with an in-depth look at Sun Moon aspects, which can fill more than one blind spot in regards to understanding your birth chart.

The Sun and the Moon (also called luminaries) are in charge of our energy levels, perception of our maternal and paternal figures in our formative years, and also the type of relationships we tend to instinctively attract , based on the emotional imprint we have perceived from our parents - among many other things that we will see below.

Apollo Sun God

The Sun: Where Our Inner Light Emerges

The Sun in the birth chart is our vital energy, just as the heart is what pumps life into our body. It is also a very generous archetype: its nature is to radiate, emanate energy and nourish with the creativity that it develops throughout life.

Through the Sun we see ourselves, define ourselves in a certain way and then imprint that imprint on the external world, often so naturally that we are not even aware of it. This process of self-definition and expression is not superficial; it is the manifestation of our personal “hero’s journey”, the quest to recognize ourselves in the mirror of the world through our unique imprint.

The most negative side of the Sun when it has not yet been integrated in a healthy way is wanting to feel superior to others and demanding too much recognition and adulation. This expression of the solar principle could be more frequent when we see it involved in dynamic aspects (square, opposition, inconjunction) with the Moon, which generate a tension that we must resolve. However, once the Sun is integrated, it feels safe, confident and calm in that vital energy and that imprint that it creates on the outside.

Each aspect that the Sun makes in the birth chart is an invitation to a different mission; a call to find heroism in the expression of our vital energy in relation to the quality of that aspect. Sun-Moon aspects, in particular, indicate that our vital energy is significantly activated when it comes into contact with the lunar principle, challenging us to integrate and express our essence in tune with our deepest needs and instincts.

The Moon: The Reflection of Our Needs

The Moon, on the other hand, is related to our body, our instinctive needs and our perception of the past. Traditionally, the Moon is also associated with memory, imagination and the ability to communicate emotionally - as opposed to objective facts. The cycles of birth, maturation and death are also ruled by the Moon (think of the lunar cycles we experience each month, which symbolically reflect these three stages).

All life comes from the woman's body, and the Moon, when associated with a feminine principle, reflects the connection with this energy as a portal to life and death.

Unlike the Sun, the lunar needs are for security, nourishment, affection and connection . The Moon also focuses on the satisfaction of primary needs. Through it, we ask ourselves: " What do I need to feel safe? " When that question is not answered (and it is normal for this to happen from time to time), the Moon falls into a state of anxiety. Thus, the Moon instinctively retreats to its placement by sign and house in our birth chart, to regain the sense of security and connection. This dynamic is born from the early experiences of our perception of security, which we then transfer to our relationships and our functioning in the world. When the Moon has not yet been able to integrate in a healthy way, this feeling of "alertness" and anxiety is constant and prevents emotional openness and safe connection with life and the world.

On the other hand, a balanced Moon is able to respond to its own needs for security and affection without remaining indefinitely in these states of anxiety, finding satisfaction and connection in the flow of life and receptivity to it.

The Sun-Moon Dance in Our Natal Chart

The Sun and Moon positions in our birth charts always indicate an interrelationship between their energies, but when they make an aspect – that is, an angular relationship – to each other, the theme of how we combine our vital energy with our instinctive needs takes on a new importance. Sun-Moon aspects show us how our inner light (Sun) can illuminate or overshadow our emotional needs (Moon), and vice versa. A harmonious integration of these aspects allows us to be generous with our vital energy, radiating enthusiasm and positivity through our unique way of being, while remaining rooted in a deep sense of security and connection with our lunar needs and also with other people.

Let's look at the potential that each of the Sun-Moon aspects has in the birth chart.

Sun Conjunction Moon in the Natal Chart

1. Sun-Moon conjunction

 Description:

The conjunction between the Sun and the Moon in the birth chart indicates a fusion between the consciousness of the self (Sun) and the instinctive and needy world (Moon). This configuration indicates a natural integration between emotional needs and the expression of vital energy. They tend to be people who energize the environment, and tend to have a strong connection with their roots and the past. When the conjunction is in different signs, its intensity decreases somewhat.

 Reflection in Real Life:

People with this aspect usually have an intrinsic alignment between what they need and what they want, which allows them to act in a way that is consistent with their desires and needs. The Sun-Moon conjunction indicates a tendency toward singleness of purpose and taking initiative, since having both luminaries in the same place means there are usually not many questions about what they should do or how, since perception is concentrated in a single sign/house. They simply feel things and act. Of course, the negative part of this tendency could be impulsiveness or the difficulty of understanding how their own actions influence or affect the environment. Also, there could be a tendency toward subjectivity and the difficulty of distancing themselves from things. The perception of the mother and father may have been that of two similar and/or integrated people, seeing them as figures that fulfill complementary or indistinct roles in the lives of these natives.

 Challenges and Relationships:

The challenge may arise in the differentiation between self and other, as they may have a tendency to merge too much with their partners, or project their needs onto them. In relationships, they seek that same integration and harmony, valuing emotional security and connection. They tend to be quite intuitive people, who if they use this potential well can relate in an empathetic and emotionally intelligent way.

Notable people with this conjunction in their birth chart: Marlon Brando (in Aries), Iggy Pop (in Taurus), Giorgio Armani (in Cancer), Daniela Mercury (in Leo), Kate Winslet (in Libra), Luz Casal (in Scorpio), Stan Getz (in Aquarius), Ja Rule (in Pisces).

2. Sun-Moon sextile

 Description:

The sextile is a harmonious aspect that indicates an opportunity for personal growth through the integration of the self and instinctive nature. It facilitates fluid communication between the parts of the being associated with the Sun and the Moon, giving rise to a fairly balanced temperament.

 Reflection in Real Life:

Individuals with this aspect tend to be balanced, understanding and integrating their personal needs well with their emotional needs. In general, they tend to be popular people, who seek social contact and harmony. In their relationships, they bring a certain calm and tendency to negotiate, which makes them attractive to others. The perception of the mother and father during their upbringing was probably positive, seeing them as supportive figures who contributed to their growth and who usually talked well with each other. Naturally - and perhaps without intending to - this is the type of relationship that they tend to attract in their adult life.

 Challenges and Relationships:

They may need to maintain a balance between their independence and their emotional life. In relationships, they seek out people who understand their need for personal growth and space. A possible Achilles heel could be a certain passivity ("if it ain't broke, why fix it?"), or a tendency to take certain things for granted in themselves and others or to avoid conflict.

Notable people with this sextile in their birth chart: Cesc Fàbregas (Sun in Taurus, Moon in Cancer), Venus Williams (Sun in Gemini, Moon in Leo), Beyoncé (Sun in Virgo, Moon in Scorpio), Armin van Buuren (Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Pisces).

3. Sun-Moon trine

 Description:

The trine is the aspect that creates the least tension between the elements that compose it. Thus, it facilitates a natural and harmonious expression of the energies of the Sun and the Moon. This aspect in the birth chart usually indicates a solid connection with the emotional world (that is, there is usually an awareness of emotions) and a strong sense of self and purpose. As in the case of the sextile, these are usually people who love social contact and harmonious relationships.

 Reflection in Real Life:

These people tend to have good self-esteem and a balanced relationship with their emotions. They tend to have a balanced and harmonious perception of both their mother and father, integrating the qualities of both in a positive way in their lives.

 Challenges and Relationships:

Their main challenge may be complacency, as inner harmony can lead them to avoid growth (this tendency is even more marked than in the Sun-Moon sextile), take things for granted, or adopt a passive approach to life. In relationships, they value stability and mutual understanding, seeking partners who reinforce their inner balance. It is important for these natives to learn to set boundaries and not avoid conflict when necessary.

Notable people with this trine in their birth chart: Vivienne Westwood (Sun in Aries, Moon in Leo), Gonzalo Higuaín (Sun in Sagittarius, Moon in Leo), Zendaya and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex (both Sun in Virgo, Moon in Taurus), Melania Trump (Sun in Taurus, Moon in Capricorn), George Best (Sun in Gemini, Moon in Aquarius).

Sun Square Moon in the Natal Chart

4. Sun-Moon Square

 Description:

The square is an aspect of tension which, until resolved, indicates a possible conflict between emotional needs and the expression of the vital and creative impulse. It can indicate internal struggles between what one is and what one needs, as well as fluctuations in energy levels.

 Reflection in Real Life:

People with this square in their birth chart may experience conflicts between their identity and their emotional needs, which was probably reflected in a conflicting or challenging perception of the mother and father during childhood, possibly seeing them as figures in opposition or in conflict with each other. The tension of this square often causes the person to attract external situations in which their internal tensions are represented. For example, a work environment where they get recognition but no sense of security or connection, or coworkers who "restrict" their initiatives. Once the square is resolved, these types of situations cease to appear. What's more, a well-integrated Sun-Moon square can give its natives resilience and the ability to proactively face challenges, creating a lasting impact on their environment. Often, this aspect, when integrated, gives strength of character and the ability to persist.

 Challenges and Relationships:

Because people with this square have often perceived the mother and father as being in constant conflict and tension, it is important to be aware of this dynamic so as not to end up believing that being in a relationship is by default like water and oil. The challenge is to find a balance between personal and emotional needs, and to be able to open up to vulnerability and emotional connection without being defensive. Again, as long as this square is not resolved, these internal tensions will be projected outwards, seeking dynamics that replicate these internal conflicts in order to heal them.

Notable people with this square in their birth chart: Orson Welles (Sun in Taurus, Moon in Aquarius), Ariana Grande (Sun in Cancer, Moon in Libra), Matt Damon (Sun in Libra, Moon in Capricorn), Zubin Mehta (Sun in Taurus, Moon in Leo), Warren Buffett (Sun in Virgo, Moon in Sagittarius), LeBron James (Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Aries).

5. Sun-Moon opposition

 Description:

Like the square, the opposition is a dynamic aspect that indicates polarity and potential for conflict between the needs of the creative and vital drive, and the emotional world. This aspect can manifest as an oscillation between two extremes, which unlike the conjunction can lead to indecision and/or procrastination. Physical energy levels are also often fluctuating until this opposition is resolved.

 Reflection in Real Life:

People with this opposition tend to be good at seeing both sides of the coin, and can be good negotiators. However, it is important for them to learn to make a choice, and to know that they will not be able to keep all possibilities open or avoid conflict constantly. On a personal level, they may feel that they have to choose between what they want and what they need, which could have been reflected in a fluctuating or conflicting perception of the mother and father, seeing them as figures that represent opposing interests or from whom they learned to balance their needs in contradictory ways. Unlike the square - which usually projects the different dimensions represented by the Sun and the Moon onto external events - the tension of the opposition is usually experienced in a much more internal way.

 Challenges and Relationships:

The biggest challenge is integrating these two opposing forces within themselves without looking for the other person to complete them in what they have not yet resolved. This can lead to looking in relationships as a battlefield for this internal conflict or, on the contrary, as a ground for reconciliation and balance. They look for partners who can help them find balance between their individual needs and their emotional life.

Notable figures with this opposition in their birth chart: Maya Angelou and Victor Vasarely (Sun in Aries, Moon in Libra), Lenny Kravitz and Donald Trump (Sun in Gemini, Moon in Sagittarius), Michael Jackson (Sun in Virgo, Moon in Pisces), Francisco Franco (Sun in Sagittarius, Moon in Gemini), Lewis Hamilton and Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales (Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Cancer).

6. Inconjunction (Quincunx) Sun-Moon

 Description:

Inconjunction is a dynamic aspect that indicates an initial lack of understanding or imbalance between the energies of the vital and creative impulse, and the instinctive and emotional world. This is an aspect that requires constant adjustment and adaptation between these two dimensions of temperament, combining the yang energies of the Sun with the yin energies of the Moon without either one overwhelming the other. Like the other dynamic aspects (square and opposition), it is feasible to resolve and give great results to the person who has it in their birth chart. When these energies have not yet been combined and integrated, there may be fluctuations in vitality and/or some health problems.

 Reflection in Real Life:

Those with this aspect in their birth chart may feel as if they live in two different worlds that rarely meet: that of their personal aspirations and that of their emotional needs. This may have been reflected in childhood in a confused or complicated perception of both mother and father, possibly seeing them as figures who do not understand each other or who brought mixed messages about how to balance these areas of life. The Sun-Moon inconjunction, as long as it has not been integrated, can give rise to a feeling of restlessness or that there is always "something missing." In any case, this well-channeled aspect can be highly energetic, ambitious and consequently, eventually successful on a personal and professional level. It is important that these natives can learn to keep anxiety and impatience at bay, using relaxation techniques.

 Challenges and Relationships:

The Sun-Moon inconjunction may have a certain difficulty enjoying the present moment, and things as they are. This includes accepting a partner with all their virtues and defects, considering that perhaps the other person does not have the same urgency to be constantly improving themselves and achieving more ambitious goals -which these natives probably have. Yeah They have-. The challenge lies in learning to attend to the needs of both the vital and creative impulse (Sun) and the instinctive one (Moon) without falling completely into one or the other. While this tension is in the process of being resolved, it will be reflected in the choice of partners who, in some way, represent this internal dilemma.

Notable people with this inconjunction in their birth chart: Akira Kurosawa (Sun in Aries, Moon in Virgo), Andy Murray (Sun in Taurus, Moon in Sagittarius), Vin Diesel and Mike Tyson (Sun in Cancer, Moon in Sagittarius), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Sun in Leo, Moon in Capricorn), Carrie Fisher and Thor Heyerdahl (Sun in Libra, Moon in Taurus), Rita Hayworth and Kim Kardashian (Sun in Libra, Moon in Pisces), Bill Gates (Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Aries).

Fernanda
