Astrology is a very rich language, full of symbols and deep meanings, but it has certain basic elements – which, if we want to start learning about astrology, are essential, because we will use and review them constantly. The houses are part of the basic language of astrology and form one of its fundamental pillars.

Houses in astrology are essential to understanding how a birth chart is constructed, since they are what give it its structure . As their name indicates, houses are places where things are “housed”, and it is precisely this concept that allows us to understand how the areas of our life are organized within astrology.

The 12 Houses of the Natal Chart
The 12 houses. On the left, the Ascendant (AC) is the line that starts them.

The starting point of the houses is the ascendant , which marks the beginning of everything. From this key point, the twelve houses are distributed around the chart, each one representing a specific area of our existence. Thinking of the houses as “places” is essential , as it allows us to understand their function as symbolic divisions of our daily lives , from our relationships, work and home, to the internal and external resources we possess.

It is crucial to distinguish houses from zodiac signs. While houses represent areas of life , signs are the ways in which we approach those areas . In other words, signs describe how we do things, but they do not define the areas where those actions manifest. This distinction is basic, but it often creates confusion for those who are just beginning to explore astrology.

In other posts we will go into more depth about the relationship between signs and houses, but for now, it is enough to remember that houses are the “places” that make up the structure of the birth chart and that allow us to explore the different facets of our life. Each one has its own energy and focus, and together they form the map of our personal world.

And Why Are They Called Houses?

Historically, astrological houses were known as “dwellings” or “domiciles.” The term “domicile” comes from the Latin domum , meaning “home.” The word “dwelling” derives from the Latin morari , meaning “to hold,” while “domicile” is related to “to direct,” with dominus being the owner of the house.

This terminology reflects the conception that each sector of the zodiac acts as a “house” or “dwelling place” for different aspects of human life, housing the planetary influences that affect those specific areas. Over time, the term “house” became established in modern astrology to describe these twelve subdivisions, each associated with different human experiences and activities.

The Meaning of Each of the 12 Houses:
