Astrology of Spain: Present and Future Cycles
The entire world is experiencing turbulent times, and Spain is no exception. This article is the first of several in which we will explore the astrology of Spain, providing a detailed analysis of current events and their impact on the future of the country.
Context of the 2023 General Elections
On 23 July 2023, Spain held a general election that left the country in a state of political uncertainty . The Popular Party (PP), led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, won the largest number of seats, but fell short of the majority needed to form a government. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), under the leadership of current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, came in second, but also failed to achieve a clear majority.
Although Pedro Sánchez was invested thanks to the support of pro-independence parties such as Junts per Catalunya and ERC , the political situation since these general elections has been one of constant deadlock. The amnesty law is one of the main points of contention, as Junts demands that the measure completely exempts figures from the procés, such as Carles Puigdemont, from serious crimes, which has blocked the approval of the law on multiple occasions. Apart from the amnesty, Junts has conditioned its support on greater funding for Catalonia and additional powers, further complicating negotiations to approve the General State Budget for 2025 .
This context has maintained a tense and uncertain political scenario , as Pedro Sánchez faces the possibility of new parliamentary defeats or even being forced to resign (a situation he already considered in April 2024 but backed out of) if he fails to secure the necessary support to maintain the stability of his government.

The Importance of Catalonia in National Politics
Catalonia has been a hotbed of political tension in Spain, especially since the independence referendum in 2017 . The region has influential pro-independence parties, such as Junts per Catalunya , whose participation has been crucial in forming a governing coalition in Madrid following the general elections in July 2023. Although Pedro Sánchez managed to secure his investiture with the support of Junts, this support has been extremely fragile and conditional , which has generated instability in his government throughout 2024.
Tensions have persisted because Junts has made its support conditional on constant negotiations , warning that its backing depends on its demands being met on issues such as full amnesty and regional funding for Catalonia. Throughout the year, Junts has proven to be a volatile partner , complicating negotiations and increasing political uncertainty.
In this unstable scenario, the appointment of Salvador Illa , leader of the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC), as President of the Generalitat of Catalonia on 8 August 2024 , has added a new dynamic. This move, supported by Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), has been seen as an attempt to moderate Catalan politics and strengthen ties with the central government. However, the unexpected reappearance of Carles Puigdemont on the same day in Catalonia, before quickly returning to Belgium, added further tension to the scenario, underlining the continued influence of pro-independence sectors in Spanish politics.
The situation in Catalonia, therefore, remains a source of blockages and uncertainty , with extremely fragile and conditional support for Pedro Sánchez's government, which is reflected in the constant negotiations and demands of Junts to maintain its support. This leaves the Spanish government in an unstable position, with recurring challenges to move forward with its political and legislative agenda.
The Natal Chart of Spain
![Natal Chart of Spain](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0757/1049/7076/files/carta-natal-espana_480x480.png?v=1723157746)
Although there are several charts that are considered to be birth charts for Spain, in my experience this is the one that has proven to be the most effective and accurate in astrological analysis.
The significance of this date lies in several historical factors. The death of John II marked the beginning of the reign of his son Ferdinand II of Aragon, who together with Isabella I of Castile consolidated the union of the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. This union is seen as the true birth of modern Spain , as it established a solid foundation for the creation of a unified state . Furthermore, this period also ushered in the final phase of the Reconquista and paved the way for Spain's global expansion , beginning with the discovery of America in 1492.
Let's see a little what it shows us:
Ascendant in the 1st Degree of Aquarius
The Ascendant at 1 degree Aquarius suggests that Spain presents a progressive and future-oriented identity . Aquarius is a sign associated with innovation, independence and social change, which has been manifested in several historical periods in Spain, such as the democratic transition and social reforms.
Unseen Luminaires: In Search of Cohesion
It is a striking feature that both the Sun and the Moon in the Spanish birth chart are unaspected , even more so considering what these luminaries rule in mundane astrology. The Sun, which represents the head of state, is a symbol of supreme authority and leadership. In the case of Spain, the unaspected Sun in Aquarius suggests a powerful but disconnected energy, which could indicate that the country's leadership has operated autonomously, without the influence or moderation of other planetary forces. This could reflect periods in Spanish history where the monarchy or the figure of the head of state has acted with a sense of independence, sometimes disconnected from the realities or needs of the people .
On the other hand, the Moon , which in mundane astrology represents the people, collective identity and national emotions, is also unaspected in the 11th house in Sagittarius . This could signal an intense emotional connection with high ideals and collective movements, but also a disconnect in how these ideals are integrated into the practical life of the country . The lack of aspects suggests that both the figure of the head of state and collective emotions operate with great force, but sometimes without finding an effective channel to express themselves or influence the general dynamics of the country. This configuration could have contributed to the challenges that Spain has faced in terms of national cohesion and unity throughout its history, and which reappear in this current period.
Solar Revolution 2024: A Difficult Knot to Untie
Spain's Solar Revolution 2024.
When analyzing Spain's 2024 Solar Revolution, we find a key dynamic with the Moon in exact opposition to Saturn , which is conjunct the Midheaven. The Moon, conjunct the Imum Coeli in Virgo, turns up the volume on collective emotions and the expectations of the people, while Saturn in the Midheaven represents the government and its handling of these demands. This opposition reflects the tension between popular needs and the way the government attempts to contain these expectations , especially in relation to borders and territorial issues.
In the 7th house , which reflects both internal relations and negotiations between the country's different political forces, we find an exact conjunction of Mars and Mercury . Mercury, which rules voting and public discourse, in conjunction with Mars, a planet associated with conflict, suggests an atmosphere of confrontation in political negotiations . This conjunction, moreover, is in square to the lunar nodes, indicating a time of critical and possibly divisive decisions for the country.
The ruler of the 7th house in this solar revolution is Saturn, which is in the 6th degree of Pisces. This degree of the zodiac is associated with the Sabian symbol of Pisces 7, “a large cross lying on the rocks.” This symbol suggests an energy of clinging to beliefs and principles at all costs , which points to a possible stalemate in negotiations and a lack of dialogue throughout the year.
Finally, the ruler of the 3rd house, which is traditionally associated with communications, media and elections, is the Sun, which in this chart is in the 8th house, square to Jupiter in Taurus in the 11th house. This square to Jupiter, ruler of politics, in a sign as reluctant to change as Taurus, suggests strong tension and lack of flexibility in the political sphere during this period. All this indicates a complicated and possibly stagnant year in terms of political evolution for Spain.
Letter from the 2023 General Elections
Letter of Start of the General Elections in Spain (07/23/2023 8:00, Madrid, Spain).
The astrological chart for the general elections of July 23, 2023 in Spain reveals significant tension that underlines the uncertainty and difficulties that have resulted from this electoral process. The Ascendant is in Leo, and its ruler, the Sun , is in the 12th house in opposition to retrograde Pluto . This position indicates an underlying power struggle, with hidden dynamics operating behind the scenes, reflecting an electoral process fraught with internal and potentially destructive conflicts.
Furthermore, the Ascendant is in the degree corresponding to the Sabian symbol for Leo 11, “children swinging under an oak tree.” This symbol is especially telling, as it literally represents a back-and-forth movement with no real progress , symbolizing a voting process that fails to resolve anything definitively. This image reinforces the idea that this general election may not have provided a clear solution and that the country may find itself stuck in a stalemate, where it is forced to hold a new election in order to move forward.
On the other hand, Venus , ruler of the 3rd house, which governs voting, is stationary - that is, not moving - in Leo and forms an inconjunction with retrograde Pluto, accentuating the difficulties in the voting process and the underlying tensions. In addition, the Moon , which symbolizes the people, is unaspected in the 3rd house, suggesting an emotional disconnection and a lack of alignment between the collective emotions of the people and the electoral process . All these factors suggest a deep stagnation in the political process. In this scenario, although the option of new elections is not a card that is on the table immediately, it would not be at all crazy to consider that Pedro Sánchez finally decides to resign in the coming months . This extraordinary situation could force a new electoral call if the tensions and political blockage persist, showing the complexity of the current moment.
Current Transits of Spain
Transits August 2024 to the Natal Chart of Spain.
In the current transits as I write (August 9), we see several important configurations in effect.
First, we have Pluto retrograde conjunct Spain's ascendant. We are facing an extraordinary situation : Normally, Pluto passes through each point in the zodiac three times during its retrograde cycle, but in this specific case, Pluto will make five conjunctions to the ascendant between 2024 and the end of 2025 due to its direct and retrograde motion. This phenomenon signals a very deep and prolonged transformation for the country, which implies that there will be no definitive resolutions until this process is complete .
Since Spain's Ascendant is in Aquarius, the co-rulers of the birth chart are Saturn and Uranus. Saturn - which in the birth chart is at 17 degrees of Virgo - is currently receiving an opposition from Saturn by transit, retrograding at 18 degrees of Pisces. This configuration is characterized by limitations and blockages between two parties , literally reflecting the political tensions in Spain. Saturn will retrograde until December 2024 and then, by turning direct, it will form its last opposition with Saturn in Virgo of Spain on February 10, 2025 , at which time this blockage could begin to ease.
Spain's other co-ruler, Uranus, is also playing a key role . Transiting Uranus will form an exact opposition to natal Uranus in August 2025 , suggesting a moment of abrupt and unforeseen disruption on several levels. This type of opposition is known for being violent and radical, indicating that drastic changes can be expected in the country. Before this, Uranus will retrograde over the Imum Coeli (24 degrees of Taurus) at the beginning of December 2024 , marking another critical moment when revisions will have to be made and certain things undone before being done again. In addition, simultaneously with this transit, Mercury will retrograde in Sagittarius over Spain's natal Uranus , which could strengthen rumors about a possible early general election . This retrograde, combined with Uranus - the planet ruling elections - suggests that the political process could be discussed and renegotiated again . Uranus, linked to unforeseen changes, and Mercury, associated with communication and agreements, seem to be playing a key role in the possible revelation of new information about political actors. Since Uranus will pass over Spain’s Imum Coeli for the last time in April 2025 , marking a profound transformation in the country’s foundations, rumors of Pedro Sánchez’s resignation could gain even more strength. This astrological combination hints that, while the situation has not yet reached its climax, the murmur of unsustainability surrounding the current government could intensify, bringing forward the possibility of new elections.
All this indicates that Spain is in the middle of a long and in-depth process of evolution for which we will not see a solution in the short term, and which we will address in more detail in future posts.
