Eclipses are special lunations, representing a break in the regular pattern of cycles we experience on Earth. In ancient times eclipses were greatly feared because the Moon and the Sun were relied upon to schedule crops, they were also used as the main sources of illumination and to measure time; so when light diminished during an eclipse it was believed that this meant a decrease in life. Although their visibility varies according to geographic location, the influence of eclipses extends globally, affecting humanity as a whole. Each eclipse occurs in pairs, separated by approximately two weeks, underlining a dynamic of closure and beginning. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, blocking out the light of the Sun. This type of eclipse can only occur during a New Moon, when both luminaries are in conjunction.

While all eclipses act as catalysts, solar eclipses push us to become aware of aspects of ourselves that we need to let go of—emphasis on 'ourselves.'

The Sun represents consciousness, and the Moon is associated with the unconscious: during a solar eclipse, our understanding and clarity are obscured by lunar energy, prompting us to become aware of nuances and aspects of our own shadow that we have not integrated.

Thus, symbolically, when the light (clarity) diminishes, we must understand things from another perspective that is not necessarily going to be logical or linear. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse involves the Earth coming between the Moon and the Sun, blocking the passage of light to the Moon. A lunar eclipse can only occur during a Full Moon, i.e. during an exact opposition between these luminaries.

Because in this type of eclipses we also see diminished light, perception and clarity decrease (literally and symbolically).

In general, a “normal” Full Moon usually illuminates certain issues and helps us to culminate and close stages. This is not necessarily the case with lunar eclipses, where there may be a function of getting in touch with a hidden part of life. What Role Do the Lunar Nodes Play?

The Lunar Nodes are gateways to deep self-knowledge and personal transformation. They represent the journey of the soul from its origin (South Node) to its future evolution (North Node), reflecting the vital lessons we are here to learn.

The Lunar Nodes are intimately connected with eclipses. During an eclipse, the energies of the cosmos intensify, opening a channel for spiritual growth and personal evolution.

How Do We Know if It's a North or South Node Eclipse?

During an eclipse, the Lunar Nodes are located at a maximum distance of 18 degrees from the eclipse itself, amplifying its influence on our lives (this is the easiest way to recognize by looking at an astrological chart if we are in the presence of an eclipse: New Moon or Full Moon less than 18 degrees away from the nodes). Keep in mind that eclipses can occur in different signs with respect to the lunar nodes.

The Saros Series

A Saros series is an astronomical period that refers to a cycle of solar and lunar eclipses. Each Saros series lasts between 1226 and 1550 years, and its eclipses are spaced apart by approximately 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours. Furthermore, Saros series overlap in time, as each Saros series contains many eclipses (69 to 87) occurring over more than a millennium.

The Saros cycle is important because after each Saros period, solar and lunar eclipses are repeated under similar conditions. This pattern was discovered by the Chaldeans around 600 BC, and is still used today to predict solar and lunar eclipses.

For example, the eclipse on October 14, 2023 was the 44th in Saros 134, and the eclipse on October 28, 2023 was the 11th in Saros 146. To put things in context, Saros 134 began with a partial solar eclipse on June 22, 1248, and the last eclipse in the series is scheduled for September 5, 2510 ( ! ).
