Eclipses 101: Everything You Need to Know
Eclipses are special lunations, representing a break in the regular pattern of cycles we experience on Earth. In ancient times eclipses were greatly feared because the Moon and the Sun were relied upon to schedule crops, they were also used as the main sources of illumination and to measure time; so when light diminished during an eclipse it was believed that this meant a decrease in life. Eclipses act as powerful catalysts for change, offering revelations and serving as turning points in our personal and collective path.
Although their visibility varies according to geographic location, the influence of eclipses extends globally, affecting humanity as a whole. Each eclipse occurs in pairs, separated by approximately two weeks, underlining a dynamic of closure and beginning. These events are organized in cycles that affect opposite zodiacal axes, such as Aries-Libra or Taurus-Scorpio, directly impacting the areas of life represented by these signs during specific periods.
Moments of Revelation
Eclipses are moments of revelation, uncovering what was hidden and forcing us to confront truths we would often prefer to ignore. These transits can be destabilizing but also liberating, pushing us toward personal growth by uncovering aspects of our lives that need to be addressed, transformed, or released.
When Does an Eclipse Influence Us Most Intensely?
Eclipses have a more intense and direct influence on our lives when they fall on significant points in our birth chart. These points can be personal planets (such as the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars), the ruling planet of the birth chart, important angles (the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and Imum Coeli) or midpoints between planets, which represent areas of fusion of planetary energies.
When an eclipse occurs near one of these critical points, it acts as a beacon, illuminating and activating the dormant energies associated with that particular point. For example, a solar eclipse that conjuncts your natal Mars can mark a period of renewal and redefinition of your desires and the way you pursue your goals. If it aligns with your natal Moon, it could indicate significant changes in your emotional life or your domestic environment.
Eclipses that interact with the angles of the birth chart often mark crucial events or phases that affect the structure of our existence. An eclipse that touches the Ascendant can bring about changes in the way you present yourself to the world and your self-image, while one that impacts the Midheaven could bring about significant changes in your career or social status.
Midpoints, although less well-known, are equally significant (we will explain them in depth in future articles on this blog). These points represent the synthesis of the energies of two planets and, when activated by an eclipse, can trigger events or processes involving the areas of life and themes symbolized by those planets.

Solar Eclipses: The Shadow in Ourselves
Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, blocking out the light of the Sun. This type of eclipse can only occur during a New Moon, when both luminaries are in conjunction.
While all eclipses act as catalysts, solar eclipses push us to become aware of aspects of ourselves that we need to let go of—emphasis on 'ourselves.'
The Sun represents consciousness, and the Moon is associated with the unconscious: during a solar eclipse, our understanding and clarity are obscured by lunar energy, prompting us to become aware of nuances and aspects of our own shadow that we have not integrated.
Thus, symbolically, when the light (clarity) diminishes, we must understand things from another perspective that is not necessarily going to be logical or linear. If we give ourselves over to this process without expecting a certain outcome, that is when solar eclipses can do wonders for us and reveal information to which we did not have access previously; and with this, a new way to begin what we are looking for and connect with what identifies us.

Lunar Eclipses: The Other Reflects Our Shadow
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse involves the Earth coming between the Moon and the Sun, blocking the passage of light to the Moon. A lunar eclipse can only occur during a Full Moon, i.e. during an exact opposition between these luminaries.
Because in this type of eclipses we also see diminished light, perception and clarity decrease (literally and symbolically).
In general, a “normal” Full Moon usually illuminates certain issues and helps us to culminate and close stages. This is not necessarily the case with lunar eclipses, where there may be a function of getting in touch with a hidden part of life. Specifically, in our relationship with another person – it does not necessarily have to be a person; it can be the relationship with a group, our work, an idea.
It is quite common for a lunar eclipse to bring us into contact with uncomfortable truths that we have conveniently kept hidden in order to function in our daily lives. That is why it has long been traditionally said that we should not sign contracts or make important decisions during eclipse days (and especially lunar ones).
Because the Moon is related to our emotional needs and sense of security, these types of eclipses can make us feel quite restless, insecure, agitated and/or experiencing emotions that we don't know how to explain.

What Role Do the Lunar Nodes Play?
The Lunar Nodes are gateways to deep self-knowledge and personal transformation. They represent the journey of the soul from its origin (South Node) to its future evolution (North Node), reflecting the vital lessons we are here to learn.
The Lunar Nodes are intimately connected with eclipses. During an eclipse, the energies of the cosmos intensify, opening a channel for spiritual growth and personal evolution.
North Node Eclipses
A North Node Eclipse symbolizes an energy of advancement and growth. This type of eclipse is associated with increase, growth, advancement, breaking new ground, and stepping out of our comfort zone. It prompts us to explore the unknown and expand our horizons, encouraging bold decisions and the discovery of new opportunities that guide us toward our true purpose. In essence, a North Node Eclipse acts as an open door that draws new things to us, helping us evolve and conquer new areas of our life.
South Node Eclipses
On the other hand, a South Node Eclipse is associated with the energy of completion and decrease. It symbolizes letting go of something we already know, letting go and closing cycles. This type of eclipse encourages us to release what no longer serves us and to close chapters in our life. Sometimes, South Node eclipses are connected with definitive closures, marking the end of a stage and paving the way for new experiences and learning. A South Node Eclipse allows us to leave behind what is familiar and comfortable to allow for growth and progress.
How Do We Know if It's a North or South Node Eclipse?
During an eclipse, the Lunar Nodes are located at a maximum distance of 18 degrees from the eclipse itself, amplifying its influence on our lives (this is the easiest way to recognize by looking at an astrological chart if we are in the presence of an eclipse: New Moon or Full Moon less than 18 degrees away from the nodes). Keep in mind that eclipses can occur in different signs with respect to the lunar nodes.

The Saros Series
A Saros series is an astronomical period that refers to a cycle of solar and lunar eclipses. Each Saros series lasts between 1226 and 1550 years, and its eclipses are spaced apart by approximately 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours. Furthermore, Saros series overlap in time, as each Saros series contains many eclipses (69 to 87) occurring over more than a millennium.
The Saros cycle is important because after each Saros period, solar and lunar eclipses are repeated under similar conditions. This pattern was discovered by the Chaldeans around 600 BC, and is still used today to predict solar and lunar eclipses.
For example, the eclipse on October 14, 2023 was the 44th in Saros 134, and the eclipse on October 28, 2023 was the 11th in Saros 146. To put things in context, Saros 134 began with a partial solar eclipse on June 22, 1248, and the last eclipse in the series is scheduled for September 5, 2510 ( ! ).

The Ruling Planet of an Eclipse Has Much to Say
Each zodiac sign is ruled by a planet (in the case of Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces, two), which brings its own unique energy and characteristics. It is important to note that during an eclipse, the ruling planet of the sign where the Moon is located takes on a leading role, being considered the ruler of the eclipse itself.
When an eclipse occurs, not only is the energy of the sign in which the Moon is located brought to light, but also that of the planet that rules it. It is this ruling planet that infuses the eclipse with an additional nuance of information, often intense and revealing.
For example, if the Moon is in Scorpio during an eclipse, we are not only enveloped in the intense, transformative energy of Scorpio, but also under the powerful influence of its traditional ruler, Mars, and its modern co-ruler, Pluto. Mars rules our will and actions, while Pluto is associated with transformation and regeneration. Together—depending on their placement by sign, house, and aspects—they will give us another layer of meaning to understand what we need to bring to light during an eclipse.

This transit highlights the importance of focusing on yourself, after periods where you may have turned your attention excessively to others, their needs, and the search for harmony in relationships. This eclipse serves as a reminder that, while caring for and supporting others is valuable, it should not come at the expense of neglecting your own emotional and physical well-being. It is a time to reflect on the balance between giving and receiving in your life, and to become aware of how much of yourself you have invested in relationships that may not be equally nourishing. This period invites you to closely examine your income, any debts you may have, as well as the value you give and receive for your talents and services. The 2nd house, being related to what we value and possess (both on a material and more personal level) pushes you to consider whether you are being fairly compensated for your work and whether your talents are being adequately valued, reminding you that the value you assign to your services and what you choose to accept from others are intrinsically linked to your self-esteem and self-respect. An eclipse here also underlines the relationship with siblings and relatives, offering an opportunity to heal old wounds or misunderstandings.
House 4:

You're in a time of re-evaluating how your professional ambitions and desire for external success are impacting your family life and emotional well-being at home. This period highlights the importance of caring for and nurturing your emotional foundation, reminding you that neglecting your personal life in favor of work or seeking external validation can lead to an emotional void. During this transit, you might feel a strong pull toward introspection, evaluating how your roots and past influence your current identity. It's an opportunity to heal old wounds related to family and home, allowing you to build a stronger, more secure foundation from which to operate in the world.

A lunar eclipse here challenges you to dispel the illusions you hold about yourself, your work or personal relationships, and your lifestyle, pushing you toward greater authenticity and proactivity. During this eclipse, you may be faced with the need to dismantle victimizing attitudes or self-sabotaging habits that have been obstructing your path to well-being and productivity. It is a call to take charge of your own life, recognizing the areas that require transformation and adopting a more disciplined and healthy approach. House 7:
A lunar eclipse in your 7th house illuminates the importance of balancing the focus between self-care and attention to others, whether they be partners, work partners, or even adversaries. This period suggests a review of how you interact in meaningful relationships and invites you to question your contribution to any present imbalances or conflicts. If you've found yourself in a cycle of giving excessively without knowing how or allowing yourself to receive, this eclipse offers the opportunity to break out of those self-imposed limitations. The inability to receive blocks not only material abundance, but also love, support, and emotional validation. Likewise, a lunar eclipse in the 8th house can lead to a reevaluation of your shared financial investments and commitments. It's a time to consider whether current strategies reflect your true wants and needs or whether it's time to adjust your approach to ensure a fairer mutual benefit. On the emotional and intimate level, this eclipse challenges you to open up more and be vulnerable in close relationships, especially with your partner. It reveals the importance of emotional intimacy and deep sharing as the foundation for a strong and transformative relationship. If you have maintained guards or barriers that prevent this openness, the eclipse encourages you to reconsider your emotional disposition, fostering an environment where vulnerability is seen as a strength and not a weakness.
House 9:
A lunar eclipse falling in the 9th house of your birth chart urges you to look beyond the everyday and superficial, inviting you to elevate your vision and focus on your personal growth and expansion. It's a time to transcend daily distractions, such as the constant bombardment of information and gossip, to delve into issues of greater depth and meaning for you. This eclipse offers the opportunity to explore new philosophical, religious, or spiritual perspectives that can provide you with a renewed sense of direction and purpose. It reconsiders and redefines your professional purpose and ambitions, urging you to align your career with your authentic talents and passions, as now is the time to take a more ambitious approach to your professional life. While the safety and comfort of your family and home are essential, you have time to invest emotionally and energetically in your professional fulfillment and in developing a public identity that truly reflects who you are and what you value. If you find yourself in a time of career transition or at the close of a professional cycle, this eclipse serves as a powerful reminder that the end of one phase is also the beginning of another. It provides the push needed to close chapters that no longer align with your personal and professional growth, freeing you to pursue new opportunities that resonate more deeply with your needs and ideals. This eclipse is a call to be ambitious not only in terms of achievements and recognition, but in the pursuit of a purpose that enriches your soul and benefits the collective.
House 11:
A lunar eclipse falling in the 11th house of your birth chart highlights the importance of community, friendship, and collective support in your life. While enjoyment and self-expression are essential, equally crucial is your connection to the collective and the contribution you make to the common good. It is time to reevaluate and reinforce your connections with friends, groups, and communities, emphasizing that your active participation in these circles not only benefits others, but also enriches your own life experience. This is a call to emerge from a certain isolation and to become more actively involved in group activities that resonate with your values and aspirations. An eclipse here can also indicate a phase of transformation in your social networks, where old friendships can give way to new ones, more aligned with your current personal growth. In this period, you could find or become part of groups that share your interests and goals, thus strengthening your sense of purpose and belonging.
House 12:

This transit signals a period of emotional and spiritual retreat, crucial if you have been overwhelmed by the pressure and demands of your daily routine and obligations. It's a good time to dedicate time to personal reflection, meditation, or any spiritual practice. Emotional and physical exhaustion is often a wake-up call to slow down and listen to your deeper needs, give yourself that permission now. This not only helps you recharge but also gain clarity about your life path and purpose.

What If An Eclipse Falls On One Of My Planets?
When an eclipse falls on one of our planets in the natal chart—or to a lesser degree square or oppose one of them—we can expect important events to be triggered in our lives. The impact of these eclipses can easily last six months or more, and sometimes they can even imply permanent changes. These transits underscore moments of transformation and profound growth on different levels of our existence.
Sun
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Sun, there is a chance that this same eclipse will also appear in our solar return, further amplifying its impact. We can expect important revelations related to energy, vital drive, creativity, and the identity we project outward. It may also involve male authorities, such as the father figure. This transit strongly pushes us towards authenticity and self-confidence, helping us to leave behind roles and attitudes that do not reflect our true self. It allows us to radiate our light with greater clarity and pride, without the need to be perfect or to please everyone. In addition, the house in our natal chart where Leo (a sign ruled by the Sun) is located will also be subject to important revelations.
Moon
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Moon, we can expect a profound turning point in our attachments, intense emotions to surface, and significant changes in our domestic life. This transit also affects our relationship with the past, family, female authority figures such as the mother, and aspects related to public image and popularity. It can influence the dynamic with our children. The revelations brought by this eclipse push us to confront and release old emotional patterns, allowing us to grow and heal in core areas of our life. In addition, the house in our natal chart where Cancer (the sign ruled by the Moon) is located will be subject to important revelations. This eclipse facilitates greater emotional clarity and a transformation in our most intimate and personal relationships.
Mercury
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Mercury, it represents a turning point in communication and logical thinking. We can expect temporary confusion in the way we express ourselves and understand others, causing stumbling blocks in our interactions. If we have business, it is crucial not to close deals during this period. This eclipse also represents a turning point regarding our intellectual concerns, ideas, and the way we process information. We may discover a new interest or realize that something no longer appeals to us. The houses in our natal chart where Gemini and Virgo (signs ruled by Mercury) are located will also be subject to important revelations.
Venus
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Venus, it represents a turning point in our perception of harmony, in our relationships, in our finances, and in our values. This transit can bring significant changes in how we value our relationships and resources, and can cause a rethinking of what we consider important and valuable in life. If we are going through a legal process at the moment, this eclipse can mean unexpected outcomes and important revelations. The houses where Taurus and Libra (signs ruled by Venus) are found in our natal chart will also be subject to important revelations.
Mars
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Mars, it brings turning points and revelations regarding our desires, the way we pursue our goals, how we assert ourselves, and our relationship with anger. This transit can trigger a lot of pent-up anger, making us feel irritable and hyper-reactive. It is crucial to avoid making impulsive decisions during this period. The purpose of this eclipse is to catalyze necessary changes, release stagnant energy, and redirect our goals. It also makes us reflect on how we invest our energy to achieve goals, developing courage and initiative. This transit pushes us to act bravely and address pending conflicts. It is important to look at the houses in our natal chart where we have Aries and Scorpio (the signs ruled by Mars), as these areas will also experience important turning points and revelations.
Jupiter
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Jupiter, it brings a turning point and revelations regarding our way of seeing the world, our beliefs, and our abundance mentality (of all kinds). This transit can affect our relationship with faith, understood as optimism and personal expansion, not necessarily religious. We could receive opportunities for expansion, such as undertaking a new training or having an experience abroad. We could also face disappointments that make us question fanaticisms or deep-rooted beliefs. This eclipse invites us to review and adjust our perspectives and beliefs to align them with our deepest truth. In addition, the houses in our natal chart where Sagittarius and Pisces are found (the signs ruled by Jupiter), will be subject to important revelations and turning points.
Saturn
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Saturn, we can expect important revelations and significant transformations related to the structure of our life and hierarchical figures. This transit can affect the structures of our work, our relationship with the government, or any form of authority in our lives. We might have to take on greater responsibilities or, on the contrary, learn to de-rigidify ourselves and overcome paralysis caused by fear. The purpose of this eclipse is to help us develop greater maturity and resilience, as well as to renew obsolete structures that, instead of helping us grow, are limiting us. The houses in our natal chart where Capricorn and Aquarius (the signs ruled by Saturn) are located will also experience turning points and important revelations.
Uranus
If eclipses already bring unexpected revelations, when one of them falls in conjunction with our natal Uranus, these revelations multiply exponentially. This is done with the aim of freeing ourselves from restrictions and doing things in a different way than what is comfortable for us. An eclipse in conjunction with our natal Uranus encourages us to innovate, adapt to the times and have a look to the future, avoiding being trapped in the past. It can also help us connect with our more humanitarian side, wanting to make a significant contribution to society. This eclipse leads us to rethink what freedom means to us, and can cause a break that frees us from something we thought gave us freedom, or on the contrary, introducing situations that show us a new perspective on freedom. The house in our natal chart where Aquarius (a sign ruled by Uranus) is located will be the area where we can expect important revelations and turning points.
Neptune
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Neptune, there is a chance that we will be hit with a harsh reality check. This transit brings to light confusions and illusions that we have held onto, and although we eventually gain more clarity, it is often the case that at the time of the eclipse we are more confused, distracted, or disoriented. This is not a good time to make decisions or jump to conclusions, as true understanding of these fantasies will develop over time, over the course of months. If we have been disconnected from our spirituality, compassion, and empathy, this eclipse can bring experiences that reconnect us with these aspects. It asks us to develop acceptance, which leads to greater spiritual and emotional clarity, helping us to better discern between reality and fantasy, and to boost our spiritual growth. The house in our natal chart where Pisces (a sign ruled by Neptune) is located will be the area where we will experience important revelations and turning points.
Pluto
When an eclipse conjuncts our natal Pluto, we can experience an extremely uncomfortable period. This transit brings repressed emotions to the surface, making us feel more fearful, paranoid, and obsessive. The revelations and turning points associated with this eclipse are often linked to deep, dark, and painful issues, such as disempowerment and abuse. These experiences, although difficult, need to be integrated into our consciousness for deep transformation and the healing of destructive patterns. Confronting these dark aspects and entering into a process of transformation and regeneration can result in the recovery of our personal power. This allows us to transmute pain and repressed emotions into renewed vitality, participating in life in an active, empowered, and confident way.
The house in our birth chart where Scorpio—the sign ruled by Pluto—is located will also be an area where we can expect important revelations and turning points.

¡Hola!
